Help choosing a GPS device - hiking, biking and geocaching?
I want to buy a handheld GPS thingy (never used one before), but my mind is astounding research across all the different available. I use it for hiking in mountainous areas and probably geocaching, what seems fun. The Magellan Triton 400 looks pretty good, as does the garmin vista HCx but it could be a bit too long for my first good ...? Can you recommend one? Not necessarily one of the two I mentioned, one properly! Thank you:) Oh, also, I'm in England one that uses EGNOS would be nice. And can they give OS map references or side only. and long term.? I recommend the Magellan Triton cons. This is a unit very buggy and is prone to accidents. Magellan has been slow to update the firmware release and customer support / tech support is very poor. Also, last time I heard, the Tritons were not receiving WAAS / EGNOS. You said that Vista HCx is too rich in features for you. The eTrex Legend HCx is like the Venture HCx but it lacks the electronic compass and barometric altimeter. If the legend was even too much for you, throw a look at the eTrex Venture HC. For a really barebones unit, without the cards, you could get a garmin etrex H It will save tracks and waypoints, and can be connected to your computer to upload / download of data with an optional serial cable data. If going a little ordinary eTrex H Yellow, make sure you get one with the H at the end of the name. The H means it is receiving high sensitivity. The regular yellow without eTrex H has a tendency to easily lose reception in the woods.
