Where can I get free maps for my handheld GPS?

I have a garmin colorado 400c and I do not want to pay more than $ 100 per card. I would pay well under $ 50, but I prefer free. I mapsource (the program that came with my GPS), but the cards I tried to download the usual load into MapSource. Any website or help with what I'm doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.
