Garmin Forerunner 50 heart rate mode ... what I'm doing something wrong?

Hi I have a Garmin Forerunner 50 watch with the strap that passes below your chest to feel your level of hatred. I get to this stage where the screen is shown with heart FOUND ... then it flashes up 54 ... Then just about anything ... the screen shows the two small horizontal lines, where the numbers should be, but it doesn't show my actual heart rate. Is it just flash up occasionally or should it be a constant on the screen saver?? I Standing still tested if the belt position didn't move ... nothing new ... Then when I went for a cycle and still nothing just the two horizontal lines numbers. Someone Can it help?
